Russian Diplomats’ Day
On February 10 the employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Embassies, Consulate Generals of Russia abroad and its missions to international organizations traditionally celebrate their professional holiday - Diplomats’ Day.
This date is associated with the earliest known mention (February 10, 1549) of the first government entity that dealt with foreign policy issues - the “Posolsky Prikaz” in historical documents.
Over the centuries, the political map of the world and systems of international relations have changed, the forms of State organization and government institutions have transformed, new foreign policy concepts and doctrines have been adopted, however, the goals and objectives of diplomacy have continuously been focused on protecting the country's interests in the foreign policy arena, strengthening trade, economic, cultural scientific ties, providing assistance to citizens and compatriots abroad. That is why the profession of a diplomat has at all times been highly recognized in society, and diplomatic service, along with military service, was considered to be a difficult task which at the same time required a lot of responsibility and was honorable.
At present, Russia continues to be an independent and active participant in international relations. The open, multi-vector, pragmatic and responsible foreign policy enables it to be at the forefront of global processes.
We remain committed to the principles of a just world order, we advocate collective efforts to overcome common challenges, develop mutually beneficial and equal cooperation with all interested countries and stand for the strict adherence to international law. Diplomatic relations with more than 190 countries have been established and are being maintained, intensive work is well under way at international venues such as the UN, OSCE, CSTO, SCO, BRICS and other multilateral associations and formats. The implementation of integration projects within the EAEU continues.
Consecutive steps are being taken to resolve conflicts in Syria, Libya, Afghanistan, as well as in the south-east of Ukraine. The re-establishment of peace in Nagorno-Karabakh has become a significant success of Russian peacekeeping activities.
At the same time, it should be noted that not all international players share our approaches. Some of them claim to be mentors, resort to double standards in their quest for dominance in world affairs, and do not hesitate to use the language of ultimatums and sanctions. Russia resolutely rejects the policy of blackmail and threats, warns those who think in terms of “zero sum games” about the harmfulness of such approaches.
We pursue a consistent policy aimed at restoring a constructive dialogue with Kiev, bringing Russian-Ukrainian relations out of the crisis. Unfortunately, there has been no reciprocal movement from the Ukrainian side so far.
We do not see an alternative to the peaceful settlement of the conflict in Donbass in accordance with the Minsk agreements. We call on the Ukrainian partners to refrain from torpedoing them, demonstrate political will and start a substantive direct dialogue with the leadership of the unrecognized republics.
Russia, for its part, as a participant in the "Normandy format" and a mediator in the negotiations in Minsk, intends to provide the necessary assistance to normalize the situation in the Donbass region.
